2003-12-06 - 11:27 a.m. Right now I'm in class and we're talking about cell phones and bandwidth and line quality. It reminded me of the short time (9 months) during which I was the unfortunate possessor of a cell phone. It was a phone for work, presented to me by the illustrious pinnacle of mediocrity, the Orlando Opera. I guess they had chosen the plan and phone based on ads, because there were a lot of ads for the Nextel walkie-talkie phones at the time. Let me tell you, they are annoying. I was told by the Nextel office that I would have complete coverage throughout the state of Florida, which was important, because not only did I live far from work, but I also went on a lot of business trips with some of the singers to various places all over the state (school performances, primarily). However, Nextel was, shall we say, slightly misled about the span of their coverage. I got coverage at my home in Kissimmee, but when I moved out to the UCF area in east Orlando, there was no coverage. Naturally, the Opera got very incensed at me for moving to a place where my company cell phone had no coverage. Anyway, that wasn't the most stupid part. I had to travel to Defuniak Springs, which is in the panhandle between Tallahassee and Pensacola (closer to Pensacola). It's so far from Orlando that it's actually in the Central time zone. I noticed on the drive that the cell phone went down to zero signal just before we got to Tallahassee. The light on the top of the phone was red after that and continued to be red throughout the trip to Defuniak Springs, and did not change back to green until we got past Tallahassee on the way back. So I contacted Nextel and described what had happened. "Oh!" said the lady who was "helping" me. "It doesn't work in the panhandle!" As though I had asked her why my Florida cell phone did not work in Antarctica or on the Isle of Capri. "I'm sure the state legislature would be very interested to know that according to Nextel, they are not actually in the state of Florida," I replied snidely. I was in a bad mood. She had no response, of course.
