Last night, after work, it rained. Margot and I drove out to the softball field for our company's team's first game. I think it's funny we are called the "Assassins". I think "Earthworms" or "Cornish Game Hens" would be better considering how most of us, including me, play. :)

"Larry, we ain't playing in this weather, are we?" Margot asked the referee.

"What weather?" Larry played innocent.

We went out to the field to warm up. We play co-ed softball, which is nice. It keeps the guys from getting too competitive and gives me the chance to yell mean things at the opposing team that I probably wouldn't do if we were both groups of just girls.

During the warm-up, I got hit directly on the front of the shin (right on the bone) with a rogue softball that was traveling at quite a clip. I have a large, bright, blossoming bruise from that that keeps deepening in color as time goes on.

Anyway, finally it was time to play. (My shin was still aching and didn't stop the whole game.) Mike had asked me what position I would like to play. "I usually play right. Deep right." They put me in as second catcher so I would take over from Monica for the last half of the game. I'm thinking, "I'm going to kneel with this nasty bruise! Eugh!"

So I did. I had a great time. Once I caught the ball with my chest. "That didn't hurt!" I announced in amazement. Larry chuckled. "I should catch them all that way." That must have thrown the batter off a bit, because he laughed too. Strike two! Heh.

I got up to bat only once and got a hit. Well, sort of. It was a low hit to third, and the baseman whipped the ball to first before I could get there. But I actually got to run, which is a major accomplishment for me!

I suppose I should note here that I have not played any softball in sixteen years and back then I only remember getting to run once the whole season. I guess growing breasts positively affected my balance. Apparently I improved by not doing anything. Imagine what I could do if I practiced!

We lost, bigtime, but we had a blast. I went back to the office, wet and muddy, to call for a ride home.
